811 Congress Ave: Secret Townhome in Renovated 1874 Building

This unique downtown home was rebuilt in 2007 by Dennis Karbash, rescuing an historic building in the heart of downtown, it’s historic facade hidden for decades. The Allen-Von Boekmann Building was built in 1874, and used for retail in more recent years.

Next door, at 809 Congress, more than a century ago, the Bismark Saloon was famously frequented by the writer O. Henry. The table and chair he used there are on display in the O. Henry Room at the Austin History Center. Get more info & great pictures at these two Texas Architect magazine articles here and here.

Designed by architect Tim Cuppett, this luxury home has historic status, thus the property taxes are discounted.

The home was sold by Mr. Karbash in November, 2009, for $5,500,000. Now listed by Diane Dopson, Diane Dopson Properties, for $7,900,000, on October 18.
